And how we can use photoshoots to reclaim our body image.
As an empowerment photographer, I understand the fears and insecurities which prevent many of us from desiring to step in front of the camera. This is true for nearly all of us when it comes to being seen and having our photo taken. It's not uncommon for people to feel self-conscious about their bodies and to be scared of seeing something they don't like in themselves because most of us have spent a long time being hyper-critical of our bodies and have grown up in a society that teaches us that our bodies are not good enough.
So it makes sense that the idea of a photoshoot may make you feel nervous.
And... I want to remind you that the more you see of yourself, the more you humanise yourself. By allowing yourself to be seen and to see yourself, you are breaking free from the expectation loop of perfection and criticism and embracing the possibility of talking to yourself in a different way.
When we see ourselves only through the lens of societal beauty standards, it's easy to pick apart our flaws and focus on what we don't like about ourselves. But when we see ourselves in a more holistic way (maybe, like an actual human as opposed to a walking list of criticisms), we can begin to understand our bodies are not just mobile blobs to be controlled but the vessels that allow us to experience the world, to feel emotions, to move, and to create. That our whole life is quite literally tied up in these things. Surely, when our whole life is in our hands, it is worth treating ourselves with a little kindness.
Having a photoshoot with me can be a powerful tool for self-discovery and self-acceptance. As a photographer, my job is not just to capture your physical appearance, but also to capture your essence and individuality and plant some seeds that you are worthy of love and respect, just as you are. I will work with you to create images which celebrate and empower and help people to ease their self-judgement.
Through the process of the photo shoot, you will begin to see yourself in a different light and appreciate your unique beauty, strengths and how important it is to celebrate your journey. And when you see the final images, you will see yourself as a brilliantly human example of someone out here existing at this moment in time, trying their best and striving for better.
When we can remember that beauty is not about perfection, it's about authenticity, it is about compassion, it is about creating more love. And there is more of that in the world when you allow yourself to see yourself as you are rather than as a before project.
If you’d like to take the first steps, I cannot wait to support you in beginning to rewrite your relationships with your body.
